Started circa 1830 by the King of Benares, it has traditionally been performed in specially created sets sprawled across the town during the festive season. Perhaps the grandest of the Ramlilas takes place in Ramnagar, in Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi district, a twelve-hour ride from Faridabad. However, the poetic banter in Urdu plays magnificently to the gallery, and more than justifies the Ramlila's raison d'ĂȘtre. One of the rare Ramlilas from Faridabad that casts women in all principal female parts, the brand of acting on display is typically standard-issue melodrama.
